Rent or buy?
- Try before you buy. An hour on most of these cards costs less than a coffee. Load the model you care about, run your own prompts and see the speed before spending hundreds. The speed simulator gives you a feel for it first.
- Rent for bursts. A weekend project, a fine-tune, or a batch job that needs more memory than you own.
- Buy if it will run most days. At 8 hours a day, 2,000 hours is about 8 months. A used card keeps resale value while rental money is gone; your power bill counts against buying.
Where these prices come from
Vast.ai is a marketplace of independent hosts: we count only verified hosts and take the cheapest on-demand offer for a single GPU, under the name Vast lists it by. Runpod's price is its cheapest on-demand rate for one GPU in stock, Secure or Community Cloud. Both refresh every hour. Storage and data transfer cost a little extra on both, and interruptible instances run cheaper still. The cheaper of the two is marked.
Break-even divides the cheapest eBay listing, item plus shipping, by the cheapest hourly rate. SXM modules also need an adapter board to run in a desktop, which their buy price leaves out.
